10K Foot Orienteering - Hoskote
7/24/20263 min read

Have you heard about Orienteering? Orienteering is a navigation based outdoor sport where participants use a specially prepared map to find a series of checkpoints called Control Points. Unlike normal running events, there are no marked routes to follow. Every athlete must decide the best path between checkpoints and complete the course in the correct sequence within the given time. The athlete with the fastest time without any errors - wins.
Orienteering is often called the "Thinking Sport" because it tests both your physical fitness and your navigation skills.
Athletes navigated through the course using only a map and compass while making quick route choices between checkpoints. Every participant had a different strategy, making the race exciting and challenging. For many participants, this was their first experience with Orienteering, and it became much more than just a running event. It was an adventure that required observation, planning, execution with confidence and very result oriented.

A Sport with More Than 100 Years of History
Orienteering began in Sweden in 1897 as a military navigation exercise and later became a competitive sport. Today it is played in more than 80 countries under the International Orienteering Federation (IOF).
The sport has several disciplines including Foot Orienteering, Mountain Bike Orienteering, Ski Orienteering, Trail Orienteering, and Kayak Orienteering. Among them, Foot Orienteering is the most popular and widely practiced around the world.

More Than a Competition
Once everyone finishes, athletes gather and start discussing their routes choices. They compare different choices, share where they got lost and how they found themselves on the map and on the ground, few of them were on point with their clever shortcuts or better choice of route they found, and exchange navigation tips. These conversations help learn faster and experienced athletes improve their strategies. This friendly atmosphere is one of the reasons why Orienteering creates a strong community. People finish the race as competitors and leave as friends.
On 19 July 2026, NthAdventure Orienteering Club (NOC) organized a 10 KM Foot Orienteering event at Bengaluru Kayak Club, Hoskote. The event saw many first timers experiencing orienteering and many saw a physical map.
