The Contour Orienteering Community Meet-up on 22nd March 2026 brought together an enthusiastic mix of beginners, elites, kids, parents, runners, and adventure seekers for an engaging introduction to the sport of orienteering. Set against the boulders filled landscape of Akkayamma Betta at 991m elevation, the session was the perfect environment for participants to experience foot orienteering beyond conventional trails.
The meet-up began with an interactive briefing on map reading, symbols, and basic orienteering techniques, while also introducing participants to the global landscape of the sport through detailed international and Indian orienteering maps. Participants were then introduced to the concept of route choice, encouraging them to think strategically rather than simply follow marked paths. For many, this was their first exposure to interpreting terrain through contour lines, making the learning experience both challenging and exciting.
Following the engaging briefing session, participants were divided based on their skill levels and provided with different sets of maps - a Beginner and an Elite map. The Beginner map, designed with 10 control points, was accessible and enjoyable for kids, first-timers, and parents, allowing them to build confidence while exploring the basics of Orienteering. In contrast, the Elite map featured 20 control points and pushed experienced participants to their limits, testing their orienteering skills, decision-making, and ability to read and respond to the terrain quickly. Confidence built quickly as the participants began traversing the terrain and were able to locate the control points using the map.

What stood out most was the energy and curiosity among the community. Questions, discussions, and shared experiences created a fun and enjoyable atmosphere where learning extended beyond theory. With participants highlighting how the session changed their perception of maps and exploring the outdoors, making it both an educational and memorable experience. The Contour Orienteering Community Meet-up contributed meaningfully by going beyond running and putting the participants brain to work, while their feet racing to the control points. to the growth of the orienteering community in Bangalore, encouraging greater participation while offering club ambassadors the experience to support their future community initiatives.
