Lost on Purpose: Orienteering at KCLAS Liberal Edge Week

Day 1

The first day included introduction to the Great Outdoor Adventure Sports, focusing on Orienteering, Adventure Race, Mountaineering, Safety and Risk in outdoors. Hands on exercise on Knots used in Rock Craft and Ice craft in mountaineering. Various presentations, short documentaries and assignments.

Day 2

This day covered the technical aspect of the course. From various types of maps, directors, compass, calculating distance, identifying own location, reading contour lines, knowing more about campus, pacing, measuring using compass, identifying the direction, landmarks, observation skills and practical’s in the outdoors

Day 3

Exploring and understanding theory into the outdoors. Understanding contours, mountains, symbols from ground to map, map to ground, find own locations with the help of landmarks, working through different types of maps. A short walk thru the Nilgiris’ Biosphere Nature Park and underwent obstacle course testing physical endurance and team bonding using skills.

Day 4

This day was about getting the students introduced toto Multi Sport Global Adventure Racing and youth involvement, technical, physical training required, career pathways, international organizations, assessments on knots, team activities, symbol games, terrain realization, and Maze Orienteering with actual dibbers inside the classroom. For the first time students experienced something like this.

Day 5

An assessment to remember and self-understand the skills learnt. In-Campus Foot Orienteering on specially designed Orienteering maps with electronic dibbers. Students explored their campus like never before finding hidden control points across using a physical map. Followed by Top 3 winner announcement and providing them with goodies, and Project preparations. The day ended with certificate distribution and showcasing a 5 Day recap in the form of a photo slideshow.
