Mall Maze Orienteering: When a Shopping Mall Became a High-Speed Mind Game
1/28/20262 min read
The mall is usually a place for casual strolling and window shopping—but last weekend, on 18th January 2026, behind the closed doors of our “secret” race arena, the atmosphere was anything but casual.
We successfully hosted our first-ever Mall Maze Orienteering event, transforming a massive indoor space into a high-speed labyrinth of decision-making. To make it more exciting, no one saw the maze until they were about to start.
The result?
A pure test of high-speed map contact and micro-route selection that left participants breathless.
Turning an Atrium into a Tactical Puzzle
While the mall’s atrium may appear spacious on a normal shopping day, our 21 × 16-meter arena was transformed into a dense grid of tactical traps. To the untrained eye, it looked like a simple series of barriers. To our runners, it was a 336-square-meter puzzle demanding constant mental engagement.
We used every inch of space to create narrow corridors that forced runners to prioritize flow over raw speed. In this arena, your eyes needed to be ten feet ahead of your feet—if you were still looking at the control you were punching, you had already lost the race.
The Elite Run: Gender Battle
As evening fell and the initial heats concluded, the energy inside the arena shifted. It was time for the Elite Run. While earlier categories focused on introduction and fun, the Elite course was a completely different beast.
Armed with a bespoke, high-complexity map designed specifically for this round, our top-tier runners faced a sequence of controls that demanded split-second decision-making. In a maze, a single missed corridor or a premature turn can decide the race.
Watching the Elites was a masterclass in focus. They weren’t just running—they were processing spatial data at a dead sprint. Every beep of the electronic dibbers echoed through the arena, a reminder of the surgical precision required to navigate the most difficult map sequence of the day.
Technology That Tells the Truth
One of the most exciting elements for spectators—and a major source of nerves for racers—was the use of electronic dibbers. These weren’t just timing devices. By punching each control, athletes left behind a digital breadcrumb trail. This allowed our team to instantly verify whether a racer had followed their unique map sequence or had fallen victim to a parallel error.
In maze orienteering, speed means nothing without accuracy, and the dibbers told the true story of every race.
