Turning Office Cubicles into a Wild Orienteering Race with Grid Orienteering!
The Office Grid Orienteering
Looking at the HPE Corporate office layout, 8 rows of desks with 4 seats each, the seating area was turned into a Grid Orienteering course. The entire floor was mapped out, transforming each desk into a grid coordinate, and with orienteering flags placed everywhere. Some flags were part of the actual route (bearing numbers and QR codes), while the rest were there to test participants' decision-making.

The ultimate lesson of the day: Orienteering is a thinking sport. A few folks got a DNF (Did Not Finish) because they rushed past a checkpoint right near the finish line without reading their map. It was the perfect proof that speed means nothing without strategy! The adrenaline was so contagious that some ran it twice to beat their times, while others are already demanding an outdoor sequel with our international-standard electronic tracking gear.
WOW @ Calicut - 24 May 2026
What happens when you strip away a runner's GPS watch, hand them a physical map, and challenge them to navigate? You get the ultimate reality check—and a crowd of converts to "The Thinking Sport."
Club Ambassador Sreejith (Calicut Orienteering Club) and Club Ambassador Rahul Verma (Bangalore East orienteering Club) brought Calicut its first orienteering workshop and race. The eye-openers started early: during the course recce, Sreejith discovered a beautiful lotus pond just 1 km from his gym—a hidden gem he had never noticed in years of living there.
BMS College of Engineering, along with NthAdventure Orienteering Club (NOC), celebrated World Orienteering Week 2026 by conducting an exciting Orienteering Workshop and Foot Orienteering session for NCC cadets
The event introduced students to the fundamentals of Orienteering, including map reading, navigation techniques, control points, and route planning. Students also participated in practical Foot Orienteering and Orienteering workshop, where they applied navigation and decision making skills in real time scenarios.

WOW @ BMS College of Engineering - 23 May 2026
On race day, athletes were awed by how detailed an orienteering map is compared to Google Maps. Since the crowd consisted of seasoned runners, we set a 3 km course. Sreejith worried it was too short, but we knew it would be their longest 3 km yet. Sent off one by one, adrenaline took over. One sprinter dashed 1 km in the wrong direction before stopping to reorient his map. Others relied on gut feeling over navigation, turning a fast run into a 90-minute mental puzzle. Everyone returned safely, humbled and buzzing. Calicut is already demanding a full-scale competition, and we are already out scouting the next map!

Twenty-eight employees lined up, ready to become athletes. After a quick 10-minute briefing, they were off—walking, jogging, and putting their brains to work.
WOW @ SLS SIGNATURE - 23 May 2026
For World Orienteering Week, the apartment residents of SLS Signature were surprise with a new challenge. Since they had already tried standard orienteering, a fun Grid-and-Maze hybrid course was created right on the local badminton court. With a great team of neighborhood kids volunteering, setup took just 30 minutes. Cones were placed in a grid, orienteering flags with control numbers were added, and a maze was mapped out to force runners to think quickly about their paths.
Before the launch, a quick crash course was held: match your surroundings, point the map north, read the symbols, and enjoy! A straightforward Beginner course and a trickier Advanced route were designed. Surprisingly, the adults played it safe with the beginner map, while the older kids eagerly tackled the advanced track. The energy was amazing. It became so competitive that participants ran the course multiple times just to beat their own best times.
By the end of the day, everyone was hooked. Many neighbors requested a full-scale race and wanted to learn more about the sport. It proved that with a little creativity, you can bring a community together for a massive win!
